Absolutely amazing. I would like to highlight...YOU OPENED A BAKERY. Girl. Amazing career, and so many stories to tell. Many female athletes stand on your strong shoulders. THANK YOU. Wishing you well.
Devon Yanko you might not have had the best year in terms of athletic performances but i would like to tell you that you are right up there with the best when talking about longevity in the sport. No single year defines your self worth or your athletic career but it is the accumulation of all the years you have been running. The way you have kept showing up both in your personal life & athletic life is commendable. Your ultrasignup shows you ran a race almost after 2017 in 2019(almost 2 year hiatus). The same happened in 2013 to 2015. But your kept juggling all the things & put up great performances in different kind of races. Be proud of yourself DEVON YANKO, rooting for you.! <3
Appreciate your words. You are correct, I didn't race ultras from late spring 2013- fall of 2015 because we had opened the bakery (I did run those 17 sub 3 hr marathons in that period!). I did however race ultras in 2017-2019 including Two Oceans and Comrades twice, Leadville and many more. I raced more marathons after foot surgery in late 2017 through 2019, but there were some ultras in there! Ultrasignup doesn't include everything or tell the whole story!
I know ultrsignup doesn't include everything or the ultra signup/your instagram posts/substack blogs are a tiny snippet of what one goes through in your life. I just mentioned those times lay emphasis on that even though you had multiple times when you weren't racing for months on end, when ever you came to competing in races- you put up a show irrespective of those long breaks.
Great piece with a lot of your story I’ve never heard before- I really enjoyed reading this.
I love the way you reframe injury and health challenges almost as much as I love this sport. Neither that mindset or the sport itself are easy to stay in but at least we ask ourselves to do one of them!
I’m benched right now with a L4/L5 bulge so this is a much needed reminder that this too shall pass. Thank you Devon!
A life full of adventure, and plenty more to come! 🙌
Really resonated with this - “We don’t have to redeem the bad patches…We rebuild. We refocus. We reignite. We carry on.”
Thank you for the reminder 💖

An amazing career that continues!
