SO good, Devon. This is brilliant. Thank you for sharing your insight and wisdom, as well as your journey. So helpful in so many ways. This is exactly the shift that I have been working on, and will continue to do so. You've got this!
To be honest Devon I see it from some what similar lense.
Talking about WSER- Roche blew up and called it off at mile 62 along with Riley Brady, Rod Farvard took the DNF decision at mile 90.7, Vincent Bouillard calling it off at 79.8 mile, Tara Dower calling it off at mile 73. Eszter Csillag, Heather Jackson & Mlynarczyk calling it off at mile 55. Peterman had to go through bout of injury which took ayear off when he was going through his peak running, he also ran 23:09 for what he run 15:13 back in 2022, her partner Erin Clark passing him on the course and there was some info that he almost walked 45 miles, it is against the ego of an ultra runner especially him being amongst the best. There were almost 90% people who didn't got the result they intended to. I see it from the lense that yeah these people gave it their all in the process overcoming tons of obstacles in their lives be it health wise, financially, balancing family & professional careers as well and got smacked in the face in the race. I am no different from them and putting in work does not bullet proof me from any of the short comings and guarantee me success. I see them & feel happy that these people gave their all and keep thinking what would they be thinking and after that they wrap all their emotions and move forward to their next races and give their all as time neither waits nor stops. All these athletes or be any human is a testimonial that yeah life sucks but just don't stick to that suck. All this is easier said than done and I haven't been able to apply this to my life till date but for the last 4-6 months I have changed the script that goes in my mind. Self serving bias/ self fulfilling stories won't ever help me, be it present or even future.
You don't know but you are amongst one of those athletes who I highly look upto. You have just kept dealing with auto immune disease and now PMDD and one can't even fathom what kind of physical, mental & emotional turmoil you would have been gone through over the period of years. But here you are just keep chipping away in your life.
And this self introspection thing can be quite devastating for our selves sometimes because it becomes default for people like us, we keep drowning doing this.
I know it is really difficult to run 100 miles, you can't fake out for a couple of hours as it is quite a long way. Hope you can do good at the upcoming races you have signed up for. Looking forward to your races. Way to go and keep putting in the work, and also remember DEVON YANKO IS THE BEST HUMAN SOUL THERE.! <3
Will be rooting for you from India.
In the upcoming 100 milers, you will surely have multiple low patches but don't let the inner narrative of you didn't train hard in this training block, you didn't do enough vert let you hold back from digging deep. Because straight away this can seem to be the right reason and you can tell yourself that yeah it is okay to bail out. Remember DEVON YANKO HAS GOT THE DOG IN HER. And as Mark Twain said- It's not the size of a dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Will be rooting for you, Allez DEVON YANKO.! :)

Meaning making can make me crazy is something I say repeatedly to myself. Love you, friend!
