Real world connections for the win! The fact that you are even being honest with yourself about what social media does for our egos is good work. The spiritual path is merely about noticing and then living and then being present with our lives and noticing again and again. We don’t have to action to make progress. Deleting isn’t better than not deleting…it all just is. Just keep oscillating and noticing and moving towards the things that feel good in your soul. Love to you, my dear.
I completely agree! As a middle age athlete, I enjoy learning about the sport from some online storytellers, but most of social media is curated posts and content—it all seems so fake. It’s a love-hate relationship for me. Thanks for writing this!
Hi, Devon! I totally get how you feel about social media. I'm a writer and I can no longer simply write. I have to be a brand (WTF??). I have to post on social media and merge connections, even though those connections are mainly pretense. I'm supposed to attain a large following on multiple platforms, be upbeat and yet serious, authentic and yet false enough to garner attention. I often think of that quote from "Little MIss Sunshine," where the brother says, "Do what you love and f*ck the rest." If only it were that simple, right? Hang in there, and keep being your honest, strong and true self.
Wow, I can really resonate with this article's content but for different reasons as I'm not a professional anything :) As a senior struggling to survive, I'm burned out on seeing vids/photos of influencers & athletes going on their mountain adventures. Every single day these people post such cool vids and images of all the fun they get to have. Heck, I can't afford to drive to the trailhead for pete's sake. Seeing this stuff does not usually benefit me. I also am done with watching/reading the content of most sponsored runners and athletes. Nothing feels genuine or encouraging anymore. However I enjoy your social media and hope you'll stay :) Your values seem to align with mine. Sending you joyful vibes from just down the hill!
I feel the same way! Even just going for a run with friends it seems we have to stop and take a photo because 'if it's not on the 'gram, it didn't happen.' UGH. Can't we just go for a run and chat like in the old days .
I have been feeling the exact same way lately about social media. Not sure the answer but I’m with ya
